Wrestling is ALIVE and well in Virginia. In a year past the pandemic and no restrictions, it’s obvious to see that high school wrestling is in a good place. In completion of the VHSL State Wrestling Championships and now hosting first ever Girls Wrestling States we ponder what is next.

As the Corner of the Mat wraps up the high school post season NOVA wrestling ranking, we would like to say congratulations to everyone in making a successful 2022-23 year of wrestling.

The Virginia Beach Sport Complex hosted the 2023 6A, 5A, and 4A State Championships which had most of the high school teams in this NOVA ranking attending this State event. So, understand that these ranking come to life based on being able to witness the many high school teams in action.

Below are the 2023 post season public high school NOVA rankings.

1 James Robinson
2 Westfield
3 Chantilly
4 George C. Marshall
5 Battlefield
6 Mountain View
7 Brooke Point
8 Skyline
9 Independence
10 Sherando

On the bubble teams: Loudoun County, Woodgrove, Stone Bridge, and Fairfax.

We are only going to highlight the top five NOVA teams as we conclude the season ending NOVA rankings.

James Robinson HS. Ranked second in the NOVA rankings heading into the post season as they took a second in their Patriot District Championships, then took a first in 6A Region C Championships.

Robinson advanced eight wrestlers onto the State Championships. The Rams had three state champions Caden Smith (106), Tristan Corbin (138), and Robert Kucharcz (175), and a sixth placer Garrett Nicholso (165).

Westfield HS. – Suffered two dual losses to Battlefield and Chantilly late in the season which drop Westfield out of the NOVA ranking in January. But once the post season came around, the Bulldogs finished strong by winning the Concorde District and the Region D Championships advancing seven wrestlers onto the 6A State Championships.

Westfield showed strength the first day of the state tournament while advancing five wrestlers onto Saturday and put four wrestlers into the State Semi-Finals. Only advancing one wrestler onto the State finals left the door open for the field to catch them. Nick Ta (132) took second place honors, Carson Easlick (120) and Robert Rerras (138) both took third place, Brendan Sholder (113) earned fourth place, and Jake Brubaker (150) finished in fifth place.
