While some teams sit idle this week and next weekend, we still see a shuffle in NOVA rankings for the third week in January. High School teams continue to have mid-week duals, while Saturday events is where most of the competition is occurring.

State powerhouse Riverbend beat Great Bridge 34-32 in a home Wildcat Thursday dual, people have asked why Riverbend is not ranked in the NOVA rankings. Here is the geographical map based on the Corner of the Mat zoning for the NOVA wrestling rankings. Everything North of the Rappahannock River.

Below are some results and the Top 10 Wrestling teams in Northern Virginia (Jan.22nd):

1 Battlefield: 1.18 Battlefield beat Osbourn 63 -14 Osbourn and Osbourn Park 61 -18 in district dual. Then on 1.21 won the Highlander Dual at McLean HS going 5-0 in dual meets and beating #6 Westfields 33-31. They maintain the number one slot for the third week in a row.

2 Skyline: 1.18 Skyline beat #9 Sherando 42-27 and move up to the #2 in the NOVA rankings. They had no weekend event schedule.

3 Robinson: The move up to #3 and had no weekend event.

4 Westfield: 1.18 Westfield beat South Lakes 69-12 in a mid-week dual and came in second at the Highlander Dual at McLean HS on 1.21. Their dual match with Battlefield proves to show that they are a 6A State contender.

5 Brooke Point: 1.21 they placed 8th at the Battle of Spotsylvania and fall from #2 in the rankings to #5. Even though they are the returning 5A State Champions and are the favor to win States again, it appears that they are not wrestling with a complete line up and have some holes.

6 Paul VI: 1.18 lost to St. Mary's Ryken, MD 45-28 in a mid-week dual as they had no weekend events. They drop to #6 for this week.

7 Independence: 1.18 Independence beat Stone Bridge 37-35 and won the Fallout Duals on Saturday. Climbing one slot in the ranking to #7 and might be the team on the up and up in the NOVA rankings. Surely can say they are the best team in Loudoun Co.

8 Woodgrove: 1.21 they won the Heritage Duals and beats Liberty 62-18 in the finals. They also are showing much strength as they get ready for the post season.

9 Sherando: With a loss to Skyline on 1.18 they fall to #9 in the rankings. Surely, they look to the be best team in Frederick Co. and expecting to win the VHSL 4A Region.

10 Stone Bridge: With Stone Bridge super close mid-week dual meet with Independence HS and their 3rd place finish on 1.21 at the Battle of Spotsylvania they move into to top 10 while Liberty getting rolled by Woodgrove and drop out.

Teams that are on the bubble:
Chantilly, Thomas Edison, George C. Marshall, Woodbridge, Forest Park, and Kettle Run.

While many schools hosting mid-week matches look for the Corner of the Mat to do additional high school wrestling rankings in the weeks ahead. The VHSL post season will start in two weeks.
