The Corner of the Mat now shares the 2024 NOVA Wrestling Rankings Top 15 Wrestling Teams. While the Virginia Beach Sport Center hosted the 6A, 5A, and 4A Boys VHSL State Championships and most of the NOVA teams that make up this top 15 rankings were in attendance. Understand that while we have many different state classifications, it comes down to the end of the season state placement that elevates schools on this NOVA wrestling rankings. These rankings are based on team’s post season state results. Below are the 2024 post season high school NOVA rankings.
1. Mountain View We are only going to highlight the top five teams as we conclude the season ending NOVA rankings. Mountain View HS. - Ranked first in the NOVA rankings heading into the post season. Winning the 5A State Championships a year ago, Mountain View prove to all they are the best in 6A school with a back-to-back 2024 State Title. Winning both the District and Region Championships, Mountain View advanced nine wrestlers onto the VHSL State Championships. The Wildcats had three State Champions (126) Nick Sanders, (144) Tyler Traves, and (165) Gabe Cortes. Picture here is Mountain View HS. Woodgrove HS. - Showed strength all year while advancing 13 wrestlers onto the State Championships. They became the first Loudoun County public school to win a VHSL Wrestling State Championships. The Wolverine advanced ten wrestlers into the 4A State Semi-Finals to close the deal on day one of the State tournemant with six state finalists. They were led by (144) Sawyer Jones, and (150) Austen Watson who both won States for Woodgrove. Having two state championship teams on this list is remarkable as both teams rest at the top of the rankings. Picture here is Woodgrove HS. Independence HS. - Is a much-improved team from a year ago and shows force by earning second place finish at the 5A State Championship behind Cox HS. of Virginia Beach. Advancing 12 wrestlers into the State tournament and earning 142 team points, put them in the top 5 of the 2024 rankings. They advanced three wrestlers into the State Championship finals as (120) Aidan Shufelt won the State title for Independence. Picture here is Independence HS. Chantilly HS. - Finished third in the rankings last year and might be a much better team than a year ago. Chantilly won both District and Regions while advancing 11 wrestlers to that 6A VHSL State Championships. The Chargers earned 127.5 team points and finished second in the 6A classification behind Mountain View. The team was led by (106) Carter Shin and (120) Ezekiel Keel who both won states for Chantilly, while (113) Michael Santos and (157) Benjamin Weader took third place honors. Paul VI - Has consistently been inside the NOVA top 5 over the past two years. Paul VI won the WCAC Wrestling Championships in early February for the first time in school history while placing in all 14 weight classes. The Panthers then took second place at the VISAA State Wrestling Tournament and earned 307.5 team points. They pushed six wrestlers on to the VISAA Championship Finals and were led by (190) Cash Colber and (215) Miles Sanderson who won states.
