The post season continues to move forward as we roll into the final week and the VHSL State Wrestling Championship. The wrestling State Championships are slated for Virginia Beach Sports Center on Friday, Feb. 17th and Saturday, 18th. Over the past two years the VHSL has hosted the State Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center and once again will run the 4A, 5A, and 6A state classification event for an exciting two days of high school wrestling. This two-day event will feature each weight class running a 16-Man bracket for the 2023 VHSL State Wrestling Championships. Each State bracket is made up of four Regions (A, B, C, and D) and at each weight class, each region qualified four wrestlers which makes up the 16-man bracket field. With four Regions, the state brackets will have four number 1, 2, 3, and 4 seeds as the number 1 and 4 seeds will be pairs up together and the 2 and 3 seeds respectively all having bouts during the first round of States. There are a total of 49 6A high schools that will be represented in the 2023 VHSL State Championships as we highlight some of the 2023 top 6A State teams that have advanced the most numbers of 1 and 2 seeds, total number of 3 and 4 seeds, and team total advancements.
Kellam HS. enters the 6A States Championships advancing the most wrestlers with 11. Team Battlefield has the most number one and two seeds with 8, while Woodbridge has the most number three and four seeds. Kellam HS. and Battlefield HS. having the highest number of seeds, do not be surprised to see both teams battling for the state crown. But Top NOVA ranked Robinson HS., Thomas Edison HS. , Chantilly HS., Woodbridge HS., and Westfield HS. all have strong wrestlers that will make moves and should expect to see these teams in the hunt as well. Out of all of the State Championships event the 6A states race to capture the 2023 Championship might be the tightest tournament this weekend with many teams having a well balance field and the strength to advance wrestlers onto the top placements rounds. There are a total of 41 5A high schools that will be represented in the 2023 VHSL State Championships as we highlight some of the 2023 top 5A State teams that have advanced the most wrestlers. The 2023 5A State individual advancements by teams:
Top rank NOVA teams Woodgrove HS. has advanced 7 wrestlers, Brooke Point HS. also has 7, Independence HS. rest at 6 individual advancements, while Mountain View leads the NOVA advancing 10 wrestlers. It might be hard for these teams to have enough fighting power to keep up with Riverbend HS. who also advanced 10. All eyes will be on Cox HS. who won the 5A Region A and will bring 13 wrestlers to the State Championships and will be the front runner to win the Championships. Great Bridge advanced 13 wrestles from their region onto the 4A State Championship and are looking to repeat again as State Champions. Powerhouse Great Bridge has won 21 State Championships dating back to 1987. The other teams in the 4A field most likely will be wrestling for second place status.
