NOVA WRESTLING RANKINGS: Top 15 Wrestling teams in Northern Virginia (Jan 27)

As we inch closer to the postseason, one of the staple end-of-season tournaments is the John “Coach K” Kayajanian Memorial, hosted by Orange HS. This 16-individual event brought in six of the top-ranked NOVA teams, including Woodgrove, Mountain View, Independence, Chantilly, Sherando, and Brooke Point.

The outcome of this event paints a clear picture heading into the postseason. That's right, as most teams are not wrestling next weekend, this will be the last ranking until the week after the VHSL State Championships.

If teams enter varsity season events without bringing their complete team, their results will show they are not at full strength. In theory, teams should move up when they win in-season tournaments. We give a lot of credit to Woodgrove for finishing the end of the season on a high note, jumping back up to the top of the NOVA rankings. The biggest leap in the ranking is Mountain View, moving up to #3. Sherando's fifth-place finish at Coach K also moves them up in the rankings.

Other changes include Fairfax beating West Springfield 39-33 in a mid-week dual, moving them up to #12.

Look for The Corner of the Mat to have NOVA results throughout the postseason and a metrics system in place to track all teams for the end-of-season NOVA rankings.
