Wrestling season has begun with New VHSL weight classes for 2022-23

As 14 weight classes will still run through a line-up, changes only occur in 7 weight classes. This happens seldom as the VHSL executive committee approved these changes last May with new classes slated as: 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, 285.

Last year the wrestling weight classes were: 106 pounds, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285. The adjustments occurred in the following class:

144 - was 145
150 - was 152
157 - was 160
165 - was 170
175 - was 182
190 - was 195

215 - was 220

Six classes from 144 to 220 are bundled closer together and at a lower weight from 1-lb to 7-lbs.

Here is the Girls weight classes for the 2022-2023:

100, 106, 112, 118, 127, 136, 146, 156, 170, 185, 225.

While High School wrestling competition will begin matches in early December wrestlers currently will look to be certifying at one of the weight classes.

Growth pounds dates for the 2022-23 is as follows:

Wrestlers will receive a one-pound growth allowance on December 24 and an additional one-pound growth allowance on January 24.

Rule on wrestlers making scratch weight:

• A wrestler must make scratch weight at some time prior to the postseason to qualify for postseason at that weight class.

• Wrestlers must have at least one official competition weigh-in at scratch weight for a weight class and participate that day at that event at that weight class or one weight class above to be eligible for postseason participation at the weight class they weighed in at.

Here is Johnny Curtis in a receive Facebook video post on weight cutting:

Johnny states "This is for my wrestling and wrestling parent friends. I get asked my opinion on weight cutting issues in general and for specific wresters particularly around this time of year because wrestling season is upon us. Sooo here is my 2 cents."
