VHSL Rule Change Creates Chaos With Wrestling Teams Schedule

While most wrestling teams have already participated in many dual meets and tournaments this season, a new 2023-24 VHSL rule change has made another layer of complexity to the sport of wrestling in Virginia. The Virginia High School League, which sanctions all the public high school sports in Virginia, made a dramatical rule change in team's schedules for the season that restricts the number of tournament events to five.

In past seasons, when teams built their team's wrestling schedules, the season was only restricted with twelve wrestling events and held their team to those twelve dates.

Here is the wording from the 2022-23 VHSL Handbook (last year).
"Wrestling - 12 Wrestlers are limited to 5 matches per individual per day over no more than two days. Each individual is limited to 60 mat appearances prior to the culminating region tournament (or the published VHSL calendar region deadline if no region tournament is held)." Page 109

The new 2023-24 VHSL state wrestling rule change now limits the number of tournament play. Here is the wording from the 2023-24 VHSL Handbook (this year).
"Wrestling - 12 contest dates, 5 of which could be tournaments (events of more than 4 teams are defined as a tournament). Wrestlers are limited to 6 matches per individual per day or 10 over no more than two days. Each individual is limited to 50 mat appearances prior to the culminating region tournament (or the published VHSL calendar region deadline if no region tournament is held)." Page 110

This change forces wrestling coaches to sit some of their wrestlers during the season as we move into the mid-season. Teams that historically have participated in many elite out of state wrestling events now are forced to juggle their team's lineup, possibly leaving a void at some weight classes while interpreting this new rule.

It is truly unclear what effect this will have between now and the end of the season other than coaches needing to track each wrestler. They may have to sit some as we move forward through the second have of the season.
