NOVA Classic showcases the best teams in the season opener. 285 Joseph Lubinskas (Battlefield) earning a fall.

Week 1 Wrestling Round Up: Mountain View claims the 2023 NOVA Classic; Defining state Champs Robinson wins the Greg Stanley; Woodgrove are champions of the Washington Elite Opener.

The NOVA Classic:

Its not hard to see that wrestling in Northern Virginia is at a high level. While teams traveled to other counties and state to compete, most NOVA wrestling teams were in action this first day of competition. The NOVA Classic drew 29 teams and over 400 wrestlers to Fairfax HS in a staple of a beginning of season event.

Mountain View HS. from Stafford is the returning 2023 VHSL 5A State Champions and won the NOVA Classic on Saturday. The Wild Cats had a full line up and lead all teams with six champions: 126 Nicholas Sanders, 138 Geoff Whelan, 144 Tyler Traves, 157 Juan Vega-Dominguez, 165 Gabriel Cortes, 190 Corey Bell. Mountain View had eleven total placers and outscored the field with (275.5) points.

Battlefield HS out of Haymarket takes home second place and had three NOVA Classic champions: 106 Logan Katz, 165 Ryan Gioffre, and 285 Joseph Lubinskas and had (229) team points. Loudoun County HS produced 9 placers and took third place with (190) points.

Greg Stanley:

Greg Stanley was originally scheduled to be hosted by Brentsville HS on Saturday but had to move this wrestling tournament to Woodbridge HS as the VHSL 3A Football State Champions game was scheduled to be played at Brentsville.

Robinson HS the returning 6A State Champions showing strength with three champions: 113 Caden Smith, 120 Anthony Pough, and 132 Tristan Corbin, and had three second placers. The Rams out scored all teams with (258) team points. Cosby HS takes second with four champions: 106 Royce Wetzle, 165 Zach Padgett, 190 Tyler Rit, and 285 James Bland. Brentsville HS takes third place at Greg Stanley with (219) points.

Washington Elite Opener:

The Elite Opener took place at Washington HS in Charles Town, WV which was a twelve team round robin wrestling tournament. Woodgrove HS from Loudoun County took home the gold with a single champion: 113 Adam Skinner. Skyline HS, Stonebridge HS, and Brooke Point HS all wrestled and had tournament placement.

Other Notable Wrestling Results:

Paul IV wrestled at the 2023 50th Raymond B. Oliver Tournament hosted by McDonogh School and earned 6th place status. 190 Cash Colbert went 4-0 and took home the gold. Oakton also wrestled at this event and took 19th place.

Independence HS hosted a Quad as they went 3-0 in dual meet on the day.
