In one of the most remarkable State Championship in recent years, the 6A State Championship came down to the final heavyweight match with Robinson HS and Woodbridge HS both having a wrestler in the heavyweight finals. This match winner would ultimately decide the State Championship for their schools. Woodbridge HS held the top spot on the leader board with 104.5 points and advanced three wrestlers at 120, 195, and heavyweight heading into the 6A Championship Finals on Saturday. Robinson HS sat in second with 104 points just a ½ point behind while having two state finalists at 152 and heavyweight. 120 Tyler Tanev of Woodbridge would earn the team’s first state champion of the season with a 7-4 decision over Anthony Orlando of Forest Park. This win would increase Woodbridge lead to 107.5 points and would be the Woodbridge final earned team points. 152 Sammy Gerard of Robinson would win an 8-1 decision win over Isaac Hegg of Oakton HS. Gerard state final victory would give Robinson 3 team points to improve to 107 points and still be ½ point behind Woodbridge. The heavyweight finals had, both Cooper Rudolph of Robinson and Joshua Mancia of Woodbridge all square 0-0 the end of the first period. Rudolph would earn first point with an escape at 1:37 minutes into the second period giving Rudolph a 1-0 lead heading into the third period. Mancia then earned an escape in the third period at the 1:07 minute mark to tie the match but Rudolph was able to keep the action going for a takedown just 5 second later. The match ended with both wrestlers on the feet in a 3-2 victory by Rudolph of Robinson. Rudolph victory and win earned 3 team points for Robinson jumping into the lead with 110 points and capturing the 6A State championship.
