Here is a closer and brief description of the past Virginia State Wrestling Championship teams over the years.

From 1970 to 2013, the VHSL's schools were organized into three group classifications based on enrollment: A, AA, and AAA. Each of the three groups were split into four regions. Each region contained three or four districts. District sizes currently vary and to just a few teams to more then ten in size. The group of schools with the largest enrollments was in Group AAA, and grouped the next largest enrollments in Group AA, and the smallest enrollments were in Group A.

Beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, the former three-group VHSL Classification (AAA, AA, and A) system was replaced by a six-group classification system with Group 1A schools having the smallest enrollments and Group 6A schools having the largest enrollments. Generally, schools that had competed in Group A have been assigned to the new Groups 1A and 2A; in Group AA, the new Groups 3A and 4A; and in Group AAA, the new Groups 5A and 6A. The VHSL regroups all public schools every two years.

Over the past ten years from 2014 until now, the State of Virginia have seen newer high schools open up and have had many high school teams float between the current classification. The links below have been separated into the different time periods from 2014 to current and from 1970 to 2013.
